Oh? Just a b-AAHHH!
This slime is a ghost who possessed a crate and haunts the Far, Far Range. You will need to survive him, make sure your slimes survive him, and eventually fight and defeat him. He is the main antagonist of Spooky Mode. Lucky, a lucky slime who is on your side, is an ally against him.

Appearance

His appearance depends on how far you've progressed through the game and what he is doing, but he has three forms outside of battle: crate form, ghost form, and possessed form. Usually, he's dormant in a possessed crate. Early game, the crate looks ordinary, but over time, it starts to turn dark purple, and later, it has a red shine from a part of it and green slime surrounding it, with spikes on the corners. If the sky turns red, whether it's day or night, then he's coming, and can leave his crate to enter ghost form, which looks like a tabby-shaped shadow with one red glowing eye, which over time begins to mutate into a translucent (but still shadowy) tabby with bloody fangs and the "shadowed eyes" aesthetic. When he's in either form, he can possess slimes, and they will have red eyes and translucent ghost ears and a tail if they aren't already a tabby or hunter, and they will have a shadowy tint to their normal body coloring.

Creepy Actions

When he is not trying to kill you or your slimes via a boss battle or jumpscare, he tries to stalk and scare you and your slimes. You may randomly get emails from a guy named The Crate who gives cryptic messages about his backstory. (The Crate is the ghost.) Your machines may malfunction by "glitching" momentarily. You may momentarily notice a shadowy figure in the distance, and if you notice it, then the figure vanishes. Sometimes, breaking a crate causes a flash of his crate form to appear before vanishing, creeping any slimes who came out of the crate. When he is attacking your slimes but not you, you'll know. If you leave the ranch and he comes, the messenger slime will give you the message, "SOS shadow is here." Or, if you sleep and you notice a red shine in the window as the time changes, you also know. Either way, when you arrive, the slimes will be terrified. There will be slimes missing, a puddle of their slime at the disappearance site. The slimes will be silent and have moved around the ranch, and other slimes may be knocked out. Your corrals and other machines will be glitching constantly. He can also attack wild areas, too.

Occurrance

Random Encounter

When he is trying to kill you by jumpscare, it will be much creepier than an ordinary creepy sight. The sky turns red, and all of the slimes notice and either hide or panic. This can also be triggered if you try to sleep, he will appear as a shadowy figure in the window of your house menu. Leaving the house results in a shadow jumpscare, and sleeping results in you being woken up at midnight while he chases you until 6AM. If he decides to go into crate form, he will gradually teleport closer to you as soon as you look away. If he decides to leave his crate, then he will straight-up attack you by jumping out of the air, and he can go invisible. Alternatively, he can choose to possess another slime, making them attack you and your slimes while being able to teleport. Any possessed slime will faint after he leaves them. He can also consume other slimes into his crate. All you can do is blast him with your water gun, and he will give up either when you blast him into the slime sea or when it turns to 6AM.

Boss Battle

There are a few instances of a true boss battle. First battle is triggered when you come home to find Lucky injured. She will explain that a crate did it, and the night after she is healed, The Crate comes back. After you defeat him, he is now able to possess slimes. Second battle is triggered when, after an attack, Lucky goes missing, and when you find her, she tells you that she got knocked out and found her head coin missing when she woke up. She will appear without her head coin from now on. Third battle is triggered when the messenger is killed, giving you a message consisting of glitching symbols. Everything appears like a typical attack when you arrive, and the messenger is still there, even though there is a visible puddle of green slime (the starter messenger is a rad/tabby). When you investigate the puddle, it is revealed that the messenger is dead, and The Crate was merely possessing her body. The messenger dies for real while a shadowy figure attacks you. From now on, you don't get messages. The fourth battle is triggered when you arrive to the scene in the midst of it: The Crate is killing a few slimes, and knocking out others by briefly possessing them, and all machines are down. He decides that you know too much and must be eliminated. The fifth and last battle happens on the range, when Lucky suddenly gets possessed. As she has grown more powerful with each battle, she is now a mini-boss to reckon with, and you must help her resist. Doing that gets her coin back. Defeat ends the game.

Battle #1

Before The Battle

Like all battles and hostile random encounters with The Crate, the sky turns red. You encounter Lucky running from something to your location.

Stage One

Any crate you come across is this crate. When he is uncovered, he can float, and Lucky states, "This is exactly what I saw that injured me!" He is hurt by being thrown against a wall.

Behavior

He tries to confuse you by teleporting all over the place.

Attacks

Attack Effect
Teleport Crazy He crazily teleports around so fast that it's impossible to hit him. When he goes to attack you by charging, he is vulnerable to you damaging him by throwing him against the wall.

Defeat

His damaged crate breaks and he enters stage two.

Stage Two

He looks like a shadowy figure of a tabby slime with red eyes. He is no longer hurt by being thrown against a wall, but is hurt by the pulse wave.

Behavior

He all out charges towards you, acting more like a feral slime. Except he is faster and stronger and can go invisible.

Attacks

Attack Effect
Shadow Stomp It is like a feral stomping, but does more damage and is harder to dodge.
Shadow Bite He goes invisible, then appears in front of your face and bites. It is like feral biting, but it does more damage.

Defeat

His broken crate reassembles and he vanishes, having given up. Lucky says, "We finally defeated him! He is no longer a danger to us. What could go wrong?" ("What could go wrong" is an infamous quote that ensures that something will go wrong.)

Battle #2

Before The Battle

Randomly after an attack, you may notice that Lucky is not here. She is not even in a nearby area, she left no notes regarding her location like usual. When the sky turns red and you do find her, she appears without her head coin. She says, "Last night was a scare, alright... and then I got knocked out. When I woke up, my head coin was missing, and I was all the way in the entrance to the Indigo Quarry." This battle almost always occurs during the day. When the battle starts, Lucky remarks, "Oh, no... That's what I think it is!"

Stage One

He is a crate, but this time, his crate is slightly purple.

Behavior

He tries to confuse you with teleportation.

Attacks

Attack Effect
Teleport Crazy He teleports around in a manner that makes him impossible to hit. Then, he attacks you by charging, when he is most vulnerable.

Defeat

His crate becomes slightly damaged and he enters Stage Two.

Stage Two

His crate appears slightly damaged, but it's not broken. He loses more HP from being thrown at a wall than in Stage One. However, he is harder to damage this way.

Behavior

He tries to approach nearby slimes and can possess them, making them aggressive. Feeding or squirting water at a possessed slime will help them resist, bringing the HP of The Crate down. When a possessed slime fights off The Crate, then they faint, and The Crate has to choose another. While a slime is possessed, The Crate does not take damage from being thrown at a wall. Lucky is immune to this.

Attacks

Attack Effect
Fury Attack A possessed slime charges, then furiously bites and stomps your face, faster than a feral ever does those actions.
Possess When a possessed slime faints, The Crate moves toward another slime, and touching it allows him to possess them.

Defeat

His crate breaks again and he enters Stage Three.

Stage Three

He is the same shadowy figure with red eyes.

Behavior

He can still possess slimes, but he does so far less often and is fully capable of giving you and Lucky the beat-down if you are not careful. He behaves like a powerful feral slime.

Attacks

Attack

Effect

Shadow Stomp He stomps you like a feral slime, but stronger and faster.
Shadow Bite He bites you. This attack is harder to do, but it does more damage.

Defeat

His broken crate reassembles and he leaves again. Lucky says, "We need to do something to protect our ranch, but what are we going to do?" Then, that task is left up to the player.

Battle #3

Before The Battle

Randomly after an attack while you are away from home, the warning message may consist of glitching symbols. Go home immediately, because something is very wrong. When you arrive, you'll notice The Messenger greeting you like usual. Everything looks normal except for a puddle of green slime. However, it is merely a disguise, as The Messenger is dead. When you get too close to the puddle, The Crate's disguise will wear off, and he will jump at you straight.

Stage One

This time, he does not use his crate form as it is damaged. He is the same shadowy figure, while his nearby crate is covered in green slime and slightly damaged.

Behavior

He behaves like a fast feral slime, chasing after you. He is damaged if you throw his crate against the wall.

Attacks

Attack Effect
Shadow Charge He charges at you and bites.
Shadow Stomp He charges at you and jumps on top of you.

Defeat

He resorts to possessing slimes to protect his damaged crate, entering Stage Two.

Stage Two

Now, The Crate needs to protect his damaged crate, so he resorts to possessing slimes. While he is possessing one, he does not take damage by his crate being thrown against a wall.

Behavior

He tries to possess slimes, and may jump from slime to slime. Slimes only faint, however, if they are possessed for too long. Lucky is immune to this. You can help a possessed slime by feeding them or shooting water at them, and when one is freed manually, The Crate takes damage.

Attacks

Attack Effect
Fury Attack A possessed slime relentlessly bites and stomps at you like a feral slime. They will also use harmful abilities against you.
Possession Jump The Crate moves from one slime to another.
Possess The Crate possesses a slime.

Defeat

His crate collapses, but it reassembles and The Crate is forced back inside, and he leaves. Lucky states, "The Messenger... He did his job very well... I guess I'll have to take over that role." From this point on, you will not recieve any messages from The Messenger, which means that you will not get prior notice if there is an attack.

Battle #4

Final Battle

Storyline

The Crate was once an ordinary tabby slime. One day, he had gotten attacked by a Tarr, and lost one eye. He hid himself in a nearby crate. Unfortunately, there was a curse on the crate that trapped him inside it, leaving him to be killed. In addition, the curse gave him shadows in his heart that he had trouble controlling. He became desperate to escape, and started stalking the rancher as an unsuccessful call for help. He met Lucky, and after an encounter with her, he figured that her coin must be lucky enough to undo the curse. So he decided to stalk Lucky and try to get her coin. But it didn't work, because the coin was only tainted, making him more powerful in a bad way.
